Sun, Moon and Rising: your big three

Your Sun, Moon and Rising signs are the three most important parts of your birth chart. The Sun is who you are becoming, the Moon is what you need to feel safe, and the Rising sign is how you meet the world.

The full deep dive

Why three signs?

When someone asks “what’s your sign?”, they usually mean your Sun sign. But a birth chart has many parts, and astrologers find that three of them say the most: the Sun, the Moon and the Rising sign (also called the Ascendant). Together they paint a much fuller picture than any one alone.

The Sun: your core self

The Sun sign is where the Sun was on the day you were born. It describes your core identity, your vitality and what you are here to grow into. It only needs your birthday. Read more in Your Sun sign.

The Moon: your inner world

The Moon sign is where the Moon was when you were born. It describes your emotions, instincts and what you need to feel safe and cared for. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days, so your birth date usually gives it, but your birth time can matter. Read more in Your Moon sign.

The Rising sign: your doorway

The Rising sign is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at your moment of birth. It describes your first impressions, your style and your approach to new situations. It changes about every two hours, so it needs your birth time. Read more in Your Rising sign.

A simple way to remember

  • Sun: who I am.
  • Moon: what I need.
  • Rising: how I come across.

A Leo Sun with a Cancer Moon and Virgo Rising, for example, might be a warm, proud person (Leo) who needs a close, safe home (Cancer) and comes across at first as modest and helpful (Virgo).
