Your Rising sign (Ascendant)
Your Rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It shapes first impressions, your style and the way you approach new things, and it needs your birth time.
The full deep dive
What the Rising sign shows
Think of your Rising sign as your front door. It is the first thing people meet: your manner, your style, sometimes even your looks. It also describes how you instinctively approach anything new, from a job interview to a party.
Why it needs your birth time
As the Earth turns, all twelve signs rise over the eastern horizon in turn, one about every two hours. So two people born on the same day can have completely different Rising signs. Your birth time and place pin it down.
The start of your chart
The Rising sign also marks the start of the first house, and so sets up all twelve houses of your chart. That is why charts without a birth time leave the houses out.
