Jupiter: growth, luck and wisdom

Jupiter is the planet of growth, optimism, luck and learning. Its sign in your chart shows where you find meaning and how you expand your world.

The full deep dive

The planet itself

Jupiter is the largest planet. It takes about twelve years to go round the Sun, spending roughly a year in each sign. Interestingly, that twelve-year rhythm matches the Chinese zodiac, and some scholars link the two. Jupiter rules Sagittarius and, traditionally, Pisces.

What it means in your chart

Jupiter describes your faith, generosity, sense of humour and appetite for life. It shows where you tend to be lucky and where you are invited to grow through travel, study and big ideas.

By element

  • Fire signs: grows through adventure and inspiration.
  • Earth signs: grows through steady effort and real results.
  • Air signs: grows through ideas, people and learning.
  • Water signs: grows through compassion and faith.

Good to know

When Jupiter returns to its birth position, roughly at ages 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60, astrologers call it a Jupiter return: a fresh chapter of growth.
