Cardinal, fixed and mutable
As well as an element, every zodiac sign has a mode: cardinal signs start things, fixed signs keep them going and mutable signs adapt and move on. Together they follow the rhythm of the seasons.
The full deep dive
Three ways of acting
| Mode | Signs | Style |
|---|---|---|
| Cardinal | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | starts, leads, takes the initiative |
| Fixed | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | holds steady, deepens, sees it through |
| Mutable | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | adapts, connects, prepares for change |
Following the seasons
Each season begins with a cardinal sign (the Sun enters Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn at the equinoxes and solstices), carries on through a fixed sign at its height, and ends with a mutable sign as it changes into the next. In the northern hemisphere, spring begins in Aries, is fully spring in Taurus, and starts turning into summer in Gemini.
In your chart
If most of your planets are cardinal, you may be a natural starter; fixed, a loyal finisher; mutable, a flexible go-between. Every team needs all three.
