The full deep dive
The story of the Snake
The Snake hid coiled around the Horse’s hoof during the Great Race. As the Horse was about to cross the finish line, the Snake slid out and startled it, taking sixth place. Patience and good timing are the Snake’s greatest tools.
Personality
Snakes are composed, elegant and observant. They read people and situations with uncanny accuracy and prefer to think before they speak. They enjoy beautiful things, deep conversation and a little mystery.
In love
The Snake is deeply devoted in love and values trust above all. They prefer a private, meaningful bond to a whirlwind romance, and once they choose someone they are in it for good.
At work
Snakes are suited to strategy, research, psychology, investigation, finance and the arts: anywhere that rewards insight and calm judgement.
Something to watch
The Snake can keep feelings so well hidden that others misunderstand them, and can become suspicious or possessive when insecure. Letting people in is how the Snake grows.
Friends, secret friend and clash
- Friend group: the Snake shares its rose pink colour on the wheel with the Ox and the Rooster. Together they are the Builders, and they understand each other easily.
- Secret friend: the Monkey. This quiet, loyal bond is shown by a matching jewel on the inner ring.
- Clash: the Pig, directly opposite on the wheel. The two pull in opposite directions, which can mean friction, or real growth if both are willing to learn.

Element and season
The Snake’s own fixed element is Fire, and it is a Yin sign. It belongs to summer on the wheel. Every Snake year also carries a year element, which changes in a ten-year cycle, so a Fire Snake and a Water Snake share the same heart but show it differently. See The five elements for how the elements work.
Lucky things
Traditionally, the Snake’s lucky numbers are 2, 8 and 9, its lucky colours are black, red and yellow, and its lucky flowers are orchid and cactus.
